The Hawaiian Islands are remote, in the middle of the Pacific.Did you know that every one of them exist because of the volcanic processes that created them?
And the only volcano that is currently alive and kicking is on the Big Island at a place called Halemaumau, which resides in the rather large Kilauea Caldera.
Even though I made this photograph years ago. The current cycle really started around 2008. With an abatement for a couple of years after the Big Blow that wiped out the community of Kapoho in 2018.
Now the eruption is ongoing and there have been about 26 events from last December resulting in lava fountains of up to 1,000 feet.
The image also represents the story of destruction and rebirth/creation as these ferns are some of the first signs of life emerging from the cooled black lava.

Walking alone . Noticing the sea and the sky. A man sees the simplest things.
A lone figure runs along the coast in Keauhou on the Big Island.
What a fantastic location for a morning run!

What is it going to be like this year?
As of now, predictions for the 2025 Western wildfire season indicate an active and challenging period due to several factors:
1. Climate Conditions: The Western U.S. is expected to experience above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation, contributing to drier landscapes. This creates ideal conditions for rapid fire spread.
2. Drought Status: Extended periods of drought, particularly in California, Oregon, and Washington, have left vegetation extremely dry, increasing the likelihood of large fires.
3. Fuel Load: Heavy growth from previous wet seasons, now drying out, provides abundant fuel, especially in forested and grassland areas.
4. Wind Patterns: Seasonal wind events like the Santa Ana winds in California could exacerbate fire behavior, leading to fast-moving, difficult-to-control fires.
5. Preparedness Efforts: Fire agencies are ramping up their preparedness with increased staffing, pre-positioning of resources, and public awareness campaigns.
Experts recommend residents in vulnerable areas to stay informed through local fire services, prepare emergency kits, and have evacuation plans in place.
For the most current and detailed forecasts, consult resources such as the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and local weather services.
