A Story of Creation

The Hawaiian Islands are remote, in the middle of the Pacific.Did you know that every one of them exist because of the volcanic processes that created them?

And the only volcano that is currently alive and kicking is on the Big Island at a place called Halemaumau, which resides in the rather large Kilauea Caldera.

Even though I made this photograph years ago. The current cycle really started around 2008. With an abatement for a couple of years after the Big Blow that wiped out the community of Kapoho in 2018.

Now the eruption is ongoing and there have been about 26 events from last December resulting in lava fountains of up to 1,000 feet.

The image also represents the story of destruction and rebirth/creation as these ferns are some of the first signs of life emerging from the cooled black lava.
